Bloomin’ Botanical Gardens – Part 1
Spring has sprung into full bloom with the help of our record-breaking rainfall this past winter season (yay)! So, it’s the perfect time to highlight local gardens to appeal to all your senses. These gardens are not to be missed now through May!
Our garden frolic starts in the San Fernando Valley, stops along the Foothills of La Canada, dips south to Pasadena and San Marino, treks up to Arcadia and ends northeast in Claremont. Join me in exploring 6 incredibly serene and luscious locations that deliver a true sensory elation experience.
First stop Lake Balboa! We begin our Zen journey at SuihoEn – The Japanese Garden. This is a phenomenal place of relaxation and wondrous beauty nestled in the heart of the San Fernando Valley. Designed by Dr. Koichi Kawana, there is a dry Zen meditation garden (karesansui) featuring Tortoise Island, a three-Buddha arrangement, and a wisteria arbor on the Plover Path. (Note: The website says these areas are closed for renovation.) Next up is my favorite spot, the expansive Chisen or “wet-strolling” garden with waterfalls, lakes and streams, abundant greenery, and stone lanterns which were hand-carved by artisans in Japan. Admission is FREE with a reservation. *Summer is the best time to see Lilies and Lotus Flowers in bloom.
Heading east to the Foothills of La Canada Flintridge is one of my local go-to favorite spots all year round – Descanso Gardens! This vast locale is home to 9 separate gardens for your viewing pleasure! See what’s in Bloom now! Not only can you visit the grounds but you can schedule to take part in programs and events for adults and children. In addition to the gardens, we have 5 sites to see and enjoy like the historical Boddy House, view SHIKI: The Four Seasons in Japanese Art until May 21st at the Sturt Haaga Gallery, the Enchanted Railroad, The Descanso Café and the Gift Shop. They are open 9am-7pm daily. Reserve day tickets here. Become a member which provides free entry, shop discounts, class discounts and member only events. *Seasonal ticketed events that I’d highly recommend booking in advance are Carved and Enchanted. They both bring unforgettable magic around Halloween and Christmas time.
Next stop is in Pasadena at the Arlington Garden. This 3-acre Pasadena City bundle of joyful respite is FREE to peruse from 8am-6pm! Boasting Pasadena’s native fauna along with birds, bees, and butterflies throughout the year. Some rules apply: if you wish to hold a planned photography session in the garden (including weddings, groups, portraits, proms, etc.) you must pay a fee and obtain a permit. Pets are welcome, but please leash and clean up after them. And I know it’s tempting to pick flowers, pods and fruit, but please refrain.
Moving unto another favorite of mine in quaint San Marino, The Huntington. You can easily spend an entire day here and not see everything. This oasis encompasses about 130 acres, featuring 16 stunning themed gardens with more than 83,000 living plants including rare and endangered species. Here’s what’s in bloom. In addition to this outdoor treasure, there is an Art Museum and an impressive Library all included in the entry fee. Weekdays they accept walk-in’s 10am-5pm (closed Tuesday) but Weekends require reservations. Plan your visit today! They also offer a Membership that includes free admission, access to world-class exhibitions, invitations to enriching events/programs, and valuable discount opportunities. Need incentive to become a member? Don’t forget it’s tax deductible!
Continuing east we land onto yet another fan favorite nestled in Arcadia, The Arboretum. Celebrating 75 years in 2023! Featuring 127 acres with 11 breathtaking gardens. A few of my favorites there are the Aquatic and Tropical Gardens. Here’s what’s in bloom now until May. Check out their event calendar for monthly happenings! Included in admission are some historical structures like The Queen Anne Cottage which is gorgeous! And if Birding is your thing, THIS IS THE PLACE! They have the likes of over 250 different species including some of the most elegant peacocks I’ve ever seen! Visiting hours are 9am-7pm and require an online reservation. Become a member and get access to over 350 gardens in all of the U.S. and Canada and other amazing benefits!
Last but certainly not least (for Part 1), we end further north east in Claremont at the California Botanic Garden. California Botanic Garden advances knowledge, conservation, and appreciation of California native plants. With an astounding 86 acres showcasing more than 22,000 native plants, some are rare or endangered. See what’s in bloom. Enjoy events/classes and guided walking tours. They are open Tuesday-Sunday 8am-7pm. Online reservations are required. Become a member and enjoy unlimited free Garden admission, plant previews, discounts on educational offerings, the Poppy Shop, Grow Native Nursery, and special events. Also includes reciprocal admission to over 300 other botanic gardens throughout North America and much more. This is one I haven’t explored yet so excited to visit soon!
